Talcum Powder Cancer Lawyer

Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer After Using Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder?

For many years, more and more research has been emerging about the dangers of asbestos. There was a wave of litigation involving asbestos-related illnesses suffered by people who lived in buildings or used automobiles contaminated with asbestos. Residents of asbestos-infected buildings are not the only victims of the deadly chemical. Since 1971, dozens of studies have linked talcum powder (or talc or baby powder) to ovarian cancer in women, caused by asbestos in the products. Recently, investigative journalists discovered that companies such as Johnson & Johnson may have known about the link between asbestos and their talc powder products yet ignored the risks while peddling their cancerous products to millions of customers.

If you have contracted ovarian cancer, or if you have a loved one who has suffered from ovarian cancer after years of using talcum powder products such as those produced by Johnson & Johnson, please contact the Morris Law Firm. You may be eligible for substantial compensation for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and emotional distress caused by your condition and the losses you have suffered.

What is Talcum Powder?

Talcum powder, also known as baby powder, is a consumer product used primarily to prevent diaper rash in infants by sprinkling the powder into a diaper. The powder keeps the baby’s bottom dry and reduces friction between the baby’s skin and the diaper, reducing the risk of a rash.

Talc powder has also been used by adult women as a feminine hygiene product to reduce moisture and odor. Adult men, likewise, use talc body powder to reduce moisture, body odor, and friction caused by daily activities.

Talcum Powder and Ovarian Cancer

Talcum powder is made from talc, a mineral made up mainly of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. In its natural form, some talc contains asbestos depending on where and how it is mined. For years, asbestos has been known to cause cancer and other conditions when inhaled into the lungs. As far back as 1976, the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrances Association (CTFA) (the trade association governing the cosmetic and personal care industries) issued voluntary guidelines stating that talc used in cosmetic products should not contain detectable amounts of asbestos.

Regardless of these guidelines, some cosmetic manufacturers have continued to market products with detectable amounts of asbestos. Over the last 50 years, more than 20 studies have linked talc powder to ovarian cancer in women. In 2003, an analysis of applicable studies revealed that women who regularly used talcum powder were 33 percent more likely to contract ovarian cancer.

Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder

As one of the largest distributors of talcum powder products in the country, Johnson & Johnson has faced a number of lawsuits alleging a link between their baby powder products and cancer developed by women. Over the last few years, investigative journalists discovered documents indicating that Johnson & Johnson knew about detectable asbestos levels in their baby powder products as far back as 1972 and never informed the FDA or the public.

J&J spent decades denying the presence of asbestos in their products and denying any link between their products and cancer. Internal corporate documents unearthed show that J&J’s own internal testing found detectable levels of asbestos in their products. Based on those internal documents and the studies linking talc to ovarian cancer, mesothelioma, and other conditions, J&J continues to face significant liability for its baby powder products.

Brands and Products With Dangerous Talcum Powder

Johnson & Johnson is one of the most notable brands to face liability as a result of talcum powder products, particularly because they have publicly lost major court cases and paid victims millions (and in at least one case, billions) of dollars as a result. J&J, however, is not the only major brand to face liability as a result of cancer-causing talcum powder.  Other major brands that have run into legal hot water as a result of their talc products include:

  • Vanderbilt Minerals
  • Colgate-Palmolive
  • Imerys Talc powder

Any person suffering from ovarian cancer or mesothelioma after prolonged use of any baby powder product should reach out to a products liability attorney to find out if there are any links between their condition and the talcum powder product.
