Zimmer Hip Replacement and Recall Cases

Zimmer is a leading provider of hip replacement devices in the United States.  Thousands of patients have received a Zimmer implant over the past several decades.  Many of these devices included a “metal-on-metal” design.  Metal-on-metal implants, including Zimmer’s Biomet M2A Magnum, can be extremely dangerous.  They are known to succumb to premature failure and, even worse, poison the blood and tissue of patients with toxic metals as the implant corrodes over time.  A number of patients have since brought claims against Zimmer, and the dangers of their metal-on-metal implants are now plain for the world to see.

If you or a loved one has been hurt by a result of a defective metal hip replacement device, the passionate medical device defect attorneys at Morris Law Firm are here to help. We will fight to get you the compensation you are owed for the harm you and your family have suffered.

What’s Wrong With Zimmer Hip Implants?

Zimmer has faced numerous lawsuits over the years due to problems with their medical devices.  The Zimmer “Durom Cup” has been known to prematurely fail, leading to severe complications and requiring surgery to fix.  Zimmer paid millions to settle some of the Durom Cup cases over the last decade, but a number are still ongoing.

Zimmer also faces ongoing liability for their Biomet M2a Magnum devices.  These implants incorporate a metal-on-metal design.  As the components wear and corrode over time, chromium and cobalt metal ions escape into the blood and tissue surrounding the implant.  Excess levels of metal ions lead to various types of metal poisoning in the blood of patients such as chromium toxicity, cobalt poisoning, and metallosis.

The conditions caused by Zimmer’s problematic implants can lead to many dangerous and debilitating effects such as chronic pain, burning, growth of pseudotumors, difficulty ambulating, skin rash and skin sensitivity, weakness, and numbness.  Blood poisoning can also limit blood flow, leading to neurological deficiencies and other problems.  Patients with a metal-on-metal implant are encouraged to get regular blood tests in order to preemptively catch and treat blood poisoning.  Surgery may be required to replace or remove a faulty implant.

Zimmer Has Paid Millions Due to Defective Hip Replacements

Zimmer has been hit with several lawsuits relating to its defective M2a Magnum metal-on-metal hip implants. Juries have found that Zimmer can and should be held liable for the injuries caused by their dangerous products. In late 2020 alone, a federal judge in Missouri upheld a $21 million verdict against the company for damages to a patient and her husband caused by the M2A Magnum. Another jury in Iowa likewise found for the plaintiffs against Zimmer to the tune of $3.55 million.

While every case is different and juries are unpredictable, the recent results demonstrate that courts and juries alike understand the damage caused by Zimmer’s defective hip implants.  While many lawsuits against Zimmer have been consolidated into a multi-district litigation, individual cases are still proceeding.  If you have suffered because of your Zimmer hip replacement, you could be eligible for a substantial financial recovery. The talented medical device defect lawyers at Morris Law Firm can get you the compensation you need and the justice you deserve.
