Stryker Hip Recall/Defect Cases: Los Angeles & Nationwide

If you have a metal hip implant courtesy of Stryker Orthopaedics, your health could be in danger.  In recent years, Stryker has issued multiple product recalls after it was discovered that their metal-on-metal hip implants fail at an alarmingly high rate.  Stryker’s metal hip implants have a defect that can lead to swelling, serious pain, mobility problems, broken bones, metallosis, cobalt poisoning, chromium toxicity, and require complete hip revision surgery.  If you have had a Stryker implant that required removal or replacement, you are entitled to compensation.  If you have a Stryker metal-on-metal hip implant currently installed, it is time to see a doctor.  You may be at risk for serious, debilitating health problems.

The medical device defect attorneys at Morris Law Firm help clients who have suffered illness or injury as a result of Stryker hip implants secure compensation for the harm they have suffered.  We will investigate your case, help you get the medical care you need, and ensure that the companies responsible for putting a dangerously defective product on the market are held liable for the damage they caused.

The Problem With Stryker Implants

Stryker Rejuvenate, ABG II, and Accolade V40 hip implant products are designed and built to include all metal parts.  The metal is susceptible to corrosion and fretting (wearing away), causing metal shards to seep into the surrounding tissue, bones, and bloodstream.  Because the design is metal-on-metal, the parts scrape against each other as the patient walks or otherwise engages their hip joint, causing the problem to become worse over time.  Elevated levels of metal in the blood can lead to metal poisoning, including conditions involving chromium toxicity, cobalt poisoning, and metallosis.

Stryker has issued recalls for its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip replacement product lines, as well as implants with their Accolade chromium and cobalt alloy femoral head.  Stryker even paid an estimated $1 billion to injured patients back in 2014 as a result of these products.  Yet Stryker has continued to manufacture and sell metal-on-metal hip replacement implant products, despite knowing all of the associated risks and complications.  Thousands of metal-on-metal Stryker implants are still on the market or implanted in patients across the country.

Symptoms and Risks from Defective Stryker Implants

If you or someone you care about has a metal Stryker hip implant, there are a number of warning signs that their implant may be defective.  The side effects of a defective implant can worsen over time, leading to painful, debilitating conditions.  Signs that a hip implant is not functioning properly include:

  • Hip, leg, groin, or joint pain
  • Swelling around the implant or nearby the hip joint
  • Signs that the implant is loose, including grinding, popping, squeaking, or clicking
  • Difficulty ambulating, including pain, numbness, weakness, or limping

Additionally, patients should watch out for signs of metal poisoning.  Metallosis can cause issues including:

  • Swelling
  • Impaired kidney function
  • Loss of blood flow
  • Thyroid issues such as weight gain, fatigue, cold feeling, or neck discomfort
  • Rashes and skin sensitivity
  • Impairment to hearing or vision
  • Cognitive troubles caused by lack of blood flow
  • Damage to the heart muscle

Patients with metal hip implants are strongly advised to get regular blood tests to check for elevated metal levels.  If you notice any symptoms, see a doctor immediately.  An experienced hip implant defect lawyer can help you secure compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damage caused by the Stryker implant.
